On August 15th when Gram sabai meetings were held in the rural areas, Children in Greater Chennai Corporation (Zone 1,4, and 5) held Children Nagara sabai meetings in 10 Wards. The child councilars in each Ward prepared the agenda and convened the meeting with the participation of the respective Ward Councilars, local leaders, teachers, police and other stakeholders in the community.
Arunodhaya team mobilised the participation of parents in SMC meeting in 19 schools in north Chennai.
Election to the Executive committee of Confederation of Arunodhaya Children Sangam was held on 28th July. The Election commission conducted the election in a democratic way.
Quarterly review meeting of Ward level Child Protection Committee meeting (Ward 38) was held on 28th June. Mr U. Ganesan, Councilar and Zone chairperson presided over the meeting. All the members were present. The actions taken in the last three months was presented,, emerging child protection issues were discussed and four action points were taken up for immediate intervention.
Arunodhaya hosted an inspiring session, 'Get-Set-Go,' to empower youth in their job search journey! đ Dr. Jude Xavier, Senior Director of Human Resources at Omega Health Care, led the session on July 21, 2024. Thirty-five young graduates and final-year students joined in to gain crucial insights on job preparation. Dr. Jude shared expert advice on crafting resumes, acing written exams, group discussions, and interviews. A mock interview session highlighted key tips on presentation and behavior, boosting the participants' confidence. The session emphasized the value of education, continuous learning, and self-confidence. Our youth left motivated and better prepared to conquer their career goals! đâ¨
Arunodhaya organised a training for community members to be Champions of women safety. This training is being done in collaboration with with Gender and Policy lab, Greater Chennai Corporation and Red dot. It is planned to train 90 community members in AIR site, Ernavur.
Arunodhaya observed International day against child labour in the intervention areas. Rallies and signatures campaign with a pledge to eliminate child labour and promote children's rights was organised with the participation of different stakeholders in the communities.
Arunodhaya organised capacity building training for Youth forum leaders on 12th June. Adv. Thenpandian facilitated the one day programme and engaged the children in developing an understanding on the existing social structure and the role of youth as change agents.
Had an enjoyable evening with the children who were in our shelter home and now reintegrated with families or enrolled in other children homes. They shared their present experience, their performance in studies and sports activities. One boy shared that he initiated Children committee in the CCI where he is enrolled now. Felt happy to listen to the children. They cut cake and celebrated the birthday of all of them and sang their favourite birthday song 'Neend neenda Kaalam'.
One day camps are being held for children sangam members in 40 areas reaching out to 1900 children. These camps are facilitated by the young facilitators. The theme is on Climate change.
Four children from Arunodhaya Silambam koodam participated in the national meet held at Cochin, Kerala from 3rd to 5th May and won medals and certificates.
Arunodhaya organised. a three day camp (3-5 May) for the young facilitators of Confederation of Arunodhaya children Sangam on the theme of Climate Change. Chennai Climate action team members facilitated the programme and led the children in understanding the web of life, identifying the causes and impact of climate change through their life experiences and exploring the action that can be initiated by them. It was a rich learning experience in the natural environment of Camp Tonakala.

It was a joyous occasion to celebrate Women's day with the members of Amudha Surabhi Self Help Group Federation (initiated by Arunodhaya). The federation is completing twenty years. The members recalled their twenty years journey remembering their success, challenges and took the oath to continue their journey in defending the rights of women and children.
Arunodhaya initiated Ward level Child Protection Committee in Ward 38, Zone 4, Greater Chennai Corporation. The first meeting of CPC was held on 20th February 2024. It is encouraging to have the presence of all the members and an involved and insightful discussion on the child protection issues in the Ward. An action plan for the next three months was drawn and the Committee decided to meet once in three months.
Arunodhaya is implementing Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Programme in partnership with Omega Health Care Services. As part of this intervention a special health camp for women facilitated by Pen Nalam Hospital was organised on February 4, 2024 in Korukkupet. Screening for cervical and breast cancer was the primary emphasis of the camp. Fifty four women were screened by the team. In order to reach more women we intend to host health camps in other locations.
'Steps to Success' a motivation session for students appearing for board exams was organised by Arunodhaya on 28th January 2024. Eight nine students studying in 10th,11th and 12th standards participated in the training. Ms. Saraswathy from Action DnA interacted with the students on developing confidence, acquiring a positive attitude, time management and physical and mental preparedness to face the exams. Ms Divya and Ms J.C. Mettilda, teachers guided the students on effectively preparing for Mathematics, English and Science subjects and oriented the students on important guidelines to be followed while writing the examinations.
National girl child day celebration was marked by the release of the short film 'Matram'(the change) produced by Arunodhaya social media team. Drawing competition for school children, awareness sessions in schools and interaction with women police were organised as part of the celebration.
Provision kits, mats and bed sheets were distributed to 100 Irula families in Sadayankuppam and Athipet.

Happy to join in the 15th anniversary celebration of Advesa trust. It is heartening to see people volunteering to promote reading habit among children. Advesa trust is running a library for underprivileged children in the premises of Jeevodhaya (hospice for terminally ill cancer patients). Twenty five children participated in the workshop held on 28th and 29th September 2023 at Youth hostel, Adyar. Mr. M. Mohan, Director, Vaalu TV, Dr. D Jayasakthivel, Professor, Dept. Of journalism, University of Madras and Mr. R. Muthukumar from University of Madras facilitated the workshop and trained the children to prepare their Journal. Women from Arunodhaya had the opportunity to exhibit their embroidery items and artificial jewellery at the 'Textures of traditions-culture festival'on 17th September 2023 held at Kraft Retail dining, Nandanam,Chennai. Embroidered handkerchiefs, pillow covers, table clothes and artificial jewellery were displayed.
Arunodhaya started a new initiative- 'Sexual and reproductive health awareness among young women' in partnership with CSR initiative of Omega Health care Private Ltd. The community facilitators training was held from 22nd Aug to 26th August 2023. During the five days training, the participants were led through a process of discussion, presentation, games and exercises to appreciate their womanhood, feel comfortable on speaking about sexual and reproductive issues, explode myths connected to menstruation, gain understanding on menstrual hygiene, sexual health and how to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases.

Another progressive step in Arunodhaya nagar. On 27th July 2023 Boomi Pooja was done for construction of 48 houses for Irula families. Tiruvallur district Collector issued the work order. Arunodhaya gifted the land to the government for construction of the houses.

Arunodhaya conducted an eye camp at Sadayankuppam (Irula community) on 22nd July 2023 in collaboration with India vision institute. 59 members benefited from the camp. 11 members have been prescribed spectacles and 4 members referred for cataract surgery. Young Scientists for Social Change - Scientific inventions exhibition was organised on 3rd June 2023 by Arunodhaya. Thirteen projects were presented by children. Making products from e waste, shoes for physically challenged, ideas to prevent pollution from factories, prevent children from falling into open drains etc were presented.

Shelter home for homeless boys was started in the year 2013 at R,.R. nagar, Kodungaiyur. The Shleter home is supported by Greater Chennai Corporation under the scheme âShelter for Urban Homeless. The shelter located opposite to the dumping yard reaches out to children working in the dumping yard, staying in the vicinity of the dumping yard, who have no homes or come form dysfunctional families. The home meets the basic needs of the children and guides them in getting educated, trained in good behaviour and have higher aspirations in life.
