Incidents of Child domestic work was identified by the Field staff of Arunodhaya during their visit to the Apartments in and around Bougainvilla Park, Anna nagar. Hence it was decided to organize an awareness programme on Child domestic work, to bring about an awareness in the community on the issue of child domestic work and gain the cooperation of the people towards the programmes of Arunodhaya in Creating Child domestic work free zones.
The programme was held on 25th September at 6.30 p.m. at Bougainvilla park, Anna nagar. The venue was ideal since there were many people visiting the park. The mini exhibition on Child domestic work organized within the park was seen by many members who visited the park.
The highlight of the programme was the presence of Hon. Minister Ms. Gokula Indra, Minister for Tourism, Govt. of Tamilnadu. During her speech, she stressed on the need for education of all children and elimination of child labour practice. Residents of Apartments in and around Bougainvilla park, Park Association members, child domestic workers, parents of child domestic workers and staff of Arunodhaya participated in the programme.
Street play by Arunodhaya cultural team titled ”mariyathu nenjam’ brought out the role of employer in curbing the practice of child domestic work. Kalaivani, a rescued child domestic worker’s sharing caught the attention of the entire audience. She narrated how she had to drop out of school due to taking up domestic work and now she is rehabilitated and continuing her studies. The Residents in the Apartments and the Officials of Park Association promised their support to the project ‘Child domestic work free zones’ and said that they would assist in identifying child domestic workers in their neighbourhood and refer them to Arunodhaya.
